Dunes Center Receives More Grant Dollars! Spokes helps!

Executive Director Doug Jenzen, Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center, shares his success story.

The Goal

“One of my goals was to revamp our educational programming, and I needed a little bit of inspiration on how to obtain funding to do so.”

 

Action Taken

“I attended the workshop [Designing Programs for Better Grant Proposals] last year shortly after I was hired by the Dunes Center and during the time in which the organization was in the middle of a complete restructuring.”

 

A Valuable Lesson

“The most valuable lesson I learned from the workshop is that you need to make a case (or an argument) for why the funding agency you’re applying to should fund your organization’s program.  I look at it like I’m writing a thesis statement for a paper similar to what was required in college.”

Successful Results
  • The Dunes Center has received every grant (at least partially) that Doug has written since he attended the workshop.
  • By extension, the Dunes Center has been able to double the size of their educational programming to serve 8,000 elementary school children in 2013 and begin including the arts in their regular STEM programming.

Does Your Board Deserve A Raise?

Time for annual reviews. For many nonprofit organizations, this is the time to review staff performance over the last fiscal year and reward good performance or address poor performance. And, the same is true for your board members. Like your employees, your board members are critical human resources to your organizations and, like employees, they, too, require a performance review.In order to conduct an effective and equitable review, however, you must be very clear in your organization’s definition of “good performance” –  starting at the board level. Board member service isn’t easy.

The men and women who choose to serve as board members for your organization are making a tremendous personal gift toward the welfare of your organization. Their intent is to do good and to strengthen your organization. Honor that intent by ensuring that they understand what your organization needs from them, providing them with the information and education required to meet those needs, holding them each equally accountable to their responsibilities, celebrating those who serve the organization well and “thanking and releasing” those who do not serve your organization well.

Keep Your Nonprofit Current with Online Giving Trends

Here are some quick tips to help your nonprofit stay current with online giving trends and maintain legal compliance:

  1. First, good news! Most local nonprofits are already registered with the California State Attorney General. And, unless you are receiving very large donations or many smaller, passive donations from donors outside of California, no further filing is required. If you start to email those smaller donors for new donations, or if the amounts of the donations increase, you will need to file in other states.
  2. Consider filing the Uniform Registration Statement which, can be found at www.multistatefiling.org. Note, the form only applies to 31 jurisdictions; please review the form carefully to determine if additional filings are needed in the states where your donors are located.
  3. New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida have very strict filing requirements for online solicitations and the use of “Donate Now” website buttons. Because these states have large populations, if you’re conducting an extensive national online fundraising campaign, you can minimize legal risk by directly filing in each of those states. Likewise, you can also choose to have a statement on your website stating that your organization is unable to accept donations from donors located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.
  4. When in doubt of whether or not to file, simply call the state’s charity regulatory offices. The staff at regulatory agencies are usually very helpful and responsive.
