About Spokes

Our Mission

We guide nonprofits to achieve their goals through support and expert resources.

Spokes is the nonprofit resource center serving San Luis Obispo County. We help nonprofit organizations build capacity, strengthen leadership, navigate challenges, and increase their impact through training, consultation, peer learning and networking opportunities, and access to expert resources.

How We Support Nonprofits

Spokes provides practical support for nonprofit executives and staff, board members and volunteers through:

  • Educational workshops and training programs
  • Leadership development opportunities
  • One-on-one consultation and technical assistance
  • Peer learning and networking roundtables and events
  • Access to nonprofit management tools and digital resources
  • Connections to subject matter experts and community partners
  • A centralized hub for nonprofit jobs and volunteer opportunities, fundraising events, meeting spaces and other community resources

Our History

Spokes traces its roots to the Nonprofit Support Center, which served nonprofit organizations in both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties beginning in 1996. In 2011, a San Luis Obispo County-specific organization was established and rebranded as Spokes, allowing for a more focused approach to supporting the unique needs of the local nonprofit community.

The name “Spokes” is inspired by the spokes of a wheel, which provide the support needed to move forward efficiently. Likewise, Spokes helps nonprofits strengthen the operational and organizational foundations that enable them to achieve their goals and maximize their impact.

Spokes is generously supported by the Hind Foundation.

Member Testimonial

“Many times you do not want to go to a meeting or conference or class, but you do anyway because you’re hoping to hear that one idea that can be truly beneficial. Every time I have gone to Spokes, I’ve come away with more than one of those ideas.  The resources they offer have been critical to the progress of our foundation. The experts they host have always been high caliber, and Spokes provided a direct connection to a grant writer who has helped us tremendously.”
